Koutali (koo-ta-li)

Noun
The Greek version of the OG wooden spoon.

Our Story

Every house has one. It brings back a sense of nostalgia of cooking in the kitchen with your parents or grandparents…and if you grew up in a Greek household, the wooden spoon was often both your friend and foe. But the best memories though, come from it being the key piece in making your favourite home-cooked meals. We’ve taken the same love your parents, grandparents and siblings put into their cooking and put it straight into our kitchenware.

As for us, we’re siblings who are putting a fresh twist on our old man’s ways. We grew up in steel capped boots, learnt to drive in the timber yard and were constantly embarrassed when our dad knocked, sniffed and stroked every bit of timber he came across at people’s homes. It’s safe to say we’ve lived and breathed timber our whole life. That, coupled with our family’s passion for cooking, The Wooden Koutali was born.

Our Timbers

We control sourcing of raw materials, legal timber, proper permits have been acquired, respecting the tree and species. We design, test and produce our products from start to finish.

BRIGALOW

Majority of chopping boards and grazing platters are made using a number of pieces of wood joined together by glue. We aren’t fans of this and that’s why our products are made from long grain, solid, edge to edge Brigalow lumber.

Sjogren’s Syndrome

Sjogren’s disease, is an autoimmune disorder where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks its own moisture producing glands. Lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell, infiltrate and destroy these glands causing a decreased production of saliva and tears. It is one of the most common autoimmune disorders affecting 0.5 percent of Australians.

Our Mum and our biggest hero suffered from this condition for over 25 years. At the time of her diagnosis there was little to no information, now, The Australian Sjogren’s Syndrome Association is working towards making their dream, ‘Sjogren’s House’ a reality.  People suffering will be able to go for treatment and their carers can also join for a quick getaway.
